Very nice and educational museum. Incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff. Outside the fort replica is great for all ages. Multiple events throughout the spring, summer and early fall. Historic renditions of colonial times and living. Great for the family.
Very enjoyable site. The history is rich, and the scenery is pastoral. Go on a late Saturday afternoon when the river is generating and you just might be lucky enough to view some paddlers coming down through the rapids. The meadow upstream is a good place to see wildlife: deer, skunk, and a wide variety of birds. Re-enactment weekends are especially good--very educational. And every year the 'Liberty' drama is well worth seeing. We return, and return, and return again.
Love this park! I have walked down here for 18+ years. The Watauga River is beautiful!
This is an interesting place for history buffs to visit. It is the site of the first free an independent community and the largest private land transaction on the continent. The park has a small museum with a video presentation, a reconstructed fort, and paths along the Watauga River with views of the shoals. There is not much to do, but the park is well worth a visit for anyone interested in the early settlement of land across the Blue Ridge.
Good park. Tennis courts seem like they could use some maintenance. Good open space to relax or walk or have a picnic.
